The centrepiece is its castle, La Fortresse Royal, a masterpiece of military medieval architecture. Its fairy tale outline, with its slender turrets and fluttering flags dominates the Najac skyline. The place du Fauburg, which marks the beginning of medieval Najac is a captivating mishmash of timber framed houses surrounding an elongated square. The village’s narrow streets are worth exploring, with breathtaking views of the oak and sweet chestnut forests of the Aveyron Gorge around almost every corner. The main or central street sweeps along the ridge to the castle and the immense Eglise St-Jean l’Evangéliste, built in 1258. Below the castle down by the river, the green meadows stretch along the river bank, providing a peaceful and tranquil setting. Najac’s swimming pool is to be found here and is open from the middle of July to the middle of September. Also located here is the centre for kayaking, trail biking and action adventures - \'Base de Pleine Nature\'. For the less energetic there are beautiful walks along the Aveyron Gorge and in the meadows. Najac has a selection of restaurants providing a wide range of cuisine. In the place du Fauburg, is a Boulangerie, a pharmacy, a small supermarket, a bookshop, the Doctor\'s surgery, and the tourist office. During the summer months, a market selling local produce is in the place du Fauburg every Sunday morning. A relaxing drink at the Bar de la Plage or a refreshing cup of tea at the Salon du Thé is always welcome. It is said that the sun always shines on Najac. Well, the village is blessed with clear blue skies for most of the year, and the summers are long and wonderfully hot, with early mild spring and late autumn. The countryside in May and June is stunningly beautiful.
