The Use of Prepositions in French

Prepositions are normally used before nouns to indicate relationships among different type of words. Prepositions can also be used to indicate where things are located in a certain place.

Common prepositions in French:

à (in, to, at)

après (after)

avant (before)

avec (with)

contre (against)

dans (in)

de (from, of, about)

depuis (since, for)

derrière (behind)

devant (before)

en (on, in)

entre (between, among)

à côtè (next)

pendant (during)

pour (for)

sans (without)

sous (under)

sur (on)

Examples:

Les chaises sont sous la table.

The chairs are under the table.

Je parle à toi.

I speak to you.

Marie est avec moi.

Marie is with me.

Peter vient de Madrid.

Peter comes from Madrid.

Les étagères sont contre le mur.

The shelves are against the wall.
