MAKING QUESTIONS IN FRENCH

 

 

Regular Case

 

 

There are three ways of forming an interrogative phrase:

 

a. by adding Est-ce que

 

Est-ce que vous allez voyager demain?

Are you going to travel tomorrow?

 

b. by changing the pitch of phrase:

 

Vous allez voyager demain?

Are you going to travel tomorrow?

 

c. by inverting the phrase:

 

Allez-vous voyager demain?

Are you going to travel tomorrow?

 

 

Interrogative Pronouns

 

 

The pronouns qui and que are used according to the rules below:

 

a. Qui means Who or Whom

 

Qui est à l’appareil?

Qui est dans le metro?

 

Who is speaking (at the telephone)?

Who is in the metro?

 

b. Que means What

 

Que faites-vous demain?

What are you going to do tomorrow?

 

Que regardez vous?

What are you watching?

 

 

Other type of questions

 

 

a. Pourquoi means Why

 

Porquoi aimez vous la pluie?

Why do you love the rain?

 

b. Parce que means because

 

Parce qu’elle me fait penser à mon enfance.

Because it makes me think about my childhood.

 

c. Quand means When

 

Quand est-ce que tu viens chez moi?

When are you coming to my house?

 

d. Comment means How

 

Comment on fait pour aller au musée?

How do I go to the museum?

 

Comment allez vous?

How are you?

 

e. Combien means How Much or How Many

 

Combien ça coûte?

How much is this?

 

Combien d’enfant avez vous?

J’en ai deux. (or J’ai deux enfants).

 

How many children do you have?

I have two children.
